Atlantis is a legendary island disappeared, first mentioned by Plato in the dialogues Timaeus and Critias.
In Plato's account Atlantis was a naval power lying "beyond the Pillars of Hercules" that conquered many parts of Western Africa and nine thousand years before the time of Solon (in approximately 9600 BC). After the failed invasion of Athens, Atlantis sank "in a single day and night of misfortune".
